Why Liverpool will win the league.

Unlike many rival fans, I do not despise Liverpool F.C. Yes, their own supporters can be an obnoxious presence on social media, and yes, perhaps they look too much into their own past. But for the last couple of years, especially this season, their future has looked very exciting.

At the time of writing, they are still unbeaten in the league, and have just battered Manchester City by a 3-1 scoreline, scoring two goals in the opening 13 minutes of the match. City looked flustered, and early in the second half, Sadio Mane added a third for the Merseyside giants. Although Bernardo Silva clawed back a consolation for City, the game was over by then, and Liverpool had dominated.

Bear in mind, this is much the same Manchester City side who were head and shoulders above the chasing pack last season, and won the title with a mighty 98 points. But Liverpool ended the season only a single point behind the champions, setting their record points tally for a season. They were incredibly lucky not to win the league themselves, but now they’re back with a vengeance, and a huge point to prove.

And they are well on track to do so. After 11 games, they have already opened up an 8 point lead on their nearest rivals, Leicester City, and as I said before, are unbeaten. They look miles better than the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea, City have slipped to 4th, and there are still question marks as to whether Leicester can keep up their miraculous run of form.

If anyone can repeat what Arsenal did back in the 2003/04 season, going the whole of the campaign unbeaten, it is Jurgen Klopp’s men. And here’s why.

Their players are, quite frankly, unbelievably good. In goal, they have the mighty Alisson, whose solidity in shot-stopping and confidence on the ball means that they have an already excellent keeper at the back who can also spark attacks. Then, we take their back four. The two full-backs, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, are very good defensively, and pose an attacking threat at which even the most celebrated wingers in the Premier League look with envy. They have a medley of titanic centre-halves; Virgil van Dijk, whom I believe to be the best central defender in the world, can be partnered with the experienced Joel Matip, the young but mature Joe Gomez, or the cult hero, Dejan Lovren.

Then we look at their midfield. Their most regular midfield three, comprised of Gini Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, and Fabinho, are all excellently well rounded players. They all have superb defensive capabilities, and so can remain organised to help out the back for if and when the need arises. But they also pose a great attacking threat (even Fabinho, who scored a cracker against City last night), and so they terrorise defenders and attacks alike for the whole of the game, rarely allowing a sniff of goal.

But perhaps the most exciting aspect of Liverpool is the front three. Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, and Mohamed Salah are easy some of the best forwards in the Premier League, if not the world. Lionel Messi, quite possibly the greatest player ever, voted for Mane as the best player in the world earlier this year. Praise does not come much higher.

All three are dynamic, creative players, and all three have superbly clinical finishing ability. They can swap positions within the front three easily, which makes them a nightmare for defenders trying to man-mark.

But it’s not just the players. Their manager Jurgen Klopp, the king of charisma, is instilling a brilliant attitude in the players, and because of this they play with a confidence, a passion, and at times an audacity which is rarely seen, and is a privilege to watch. And the fans, who have been waiting almost 30 years for a league title, are some of the most vocal in the world, and will be behind them 100%.

So, with world class players, a genius of a manager, and superb fans, you have to wonder: how could they not win the league?

  1. I think you’re right, Liverpool will win the league, as you mentioned their two full backs have enviable attacking quality, and I think they are the key ,as illustrated against Man City. Guardiola has been credited to licence to full backs to be intergral to the attack but Klopp has out pepped Pep.
